140km Mount Buffalo and Mount Beauty

140km – 2,300m of climbing – 3 climbs – HARD
Turn right from the start and head up to Mount Buffalo, turning around at the Dingo Dell cafe. When you get back to Bright, you’ll continue up the Ovens Valley and climb over Tawonga Gap, to the checkpoint at Mount Beauty, before returning back to Bright.
This distance has a lot of the attractions of the 200km distance – you climb Mount Buffalo first, before climbing Tawonga Gap twice, but it’s 60km shorter and you get to tackle all three climbs in somewhat cooler conditions.

Leave Bright at 6.40am and follow in the tracks of the 200km riders, travelling to Porepunkah along the Great Alpine Road, before turning left at the second exit off the roundabout and starting the long climb up to Mount Buffalo (1330m).
If you need extra water, you can pick it up at the water stop before Mackeys Lookout, about halfway up the main climb. The major climb is over when you reach The Gap, where you travel down and then across to Lake Catani, before taking another deep breath to climb the final pinch into the control at Dingo Dell.
Rest and refuel at Dingo Dell, before beginning the descent back to Bright. Continue straight through town, as there isn’t a checkpoint in Bright. Water is available at the Information Rotunda just before town.
At Germantown, 5km beyond the town centre, turn left from the Great Alpine Road and it is straight on to the climb of Tawonga Gap (885m). Up and over and at the bottom turn right onto the Kiewa Valley Highway, to proceed to your turnaround checkpoint on the left, behind the Mount Beauty Information Centre.
After a refuel at Mount Beauty, you return to Bright, back over the steeper side of Tawonga Gap. However, it’s pretty much all down hill to Bright from the top, but take extra care as this descent has an abnormally high incidence of cycle accidents. It’s trickier than it looks.

We’ll do our best to keep you safe on the day with food and water on-course, mobile moto marshals, and comprehensive medical and emergency coverage, but you must be prepared for this ride.
Even though this ride is held at the height of summer, it is not uncommon for conditions at altitude to be freezing, when the heat is stifling in the valleys. Make sure you have adequate clothing for differing conditions.
Proper physical and mental preparation is very important, together with a “pace yourself” approach. The only person you are racing is yourself: the challenge you are setting yourself is simply to finish safely.
