130km Falls Creek

130km – 2,300m of climbing – 3 climbs – HARD

The Alpine Classic originally featured only the 200km distance, however in 1992 in an effort to encourage people to “try before they buy”, the 130km was introduced.

Ride from Bright, over Tawonga Gap, through Mount Beauty and then up the 30km climb to Falls Creek before returning back via the Gap to Bright.

$170 (early bird price for a strictly limited time!)

Your Safety

We’ll do our best to keep you safe on the day with food and water on-course, mobile moto marshals, and comprehensive medical and emergency coverage, but you must be prepared for this ride.

Even though this ride is held at the height of summer, it is not uncommon for conditions at altitude to be freezing, when the heat is stifling in the valleys. Make sure you have adequate clothing for differing conditions.

Proper physical and mental preparation is very important, together with a “pace yourself” approach. The only person you are racing is yourself: the challenge you are setting yourself is simply to finish safely.

Ride Notes

Leaving Bright (300m) on the Great Alpine Way (direction Harrietville), you cycle to Germantown (approx. 5km) and turn left to start the 14km climb of Tawonga Gap (885m). After descending 8km down the Gap on the other side, you turn right at the bottom onto the Kiewa Valley Highway and proceed towards the Mount Beauty control on the left, behind the Mount Beauty Information Centre.

Most riders stop here for food and water, before starting the long climb (30km) to Falls Creek (1560m) and more refreshments. There is water on the way up, over the river, opposite the Fainter Falls parking area, about 2km past Bogong.

From Falls Creek you retrace the route to Mount Beauty (no control on return), to climb back over Tawonga Gap to Bright and the finish in Howitt Park. Be very careful on this descent, as the Bright side of Tawonga Gap has an extremely high incidence of cycling accidents!

Unlike those who have entered the 200km ride, your day’s work is over and you have the rest of the day to kick up your heels at the Bonjour Bright celebrations. The advantages of this ride are that most of your climbing is done in the relative cool of the morning and it’s an out and back course.
