2 days – 250km – 4,200m of climbing – 3 climbs
The Alpine Raid is a two-day event, which follows the same route as the Alpine Classic’s ACE250 event (Bright, Omeo, Falls Creek, Mount Beauty and back to Bright). The scenery is the same, the hills are just as long and steep, but the extra day means that the ride is much less demanding. Riders do not have to qualify before entering.
This year’s Alpine Raid will take place on 26-27 January 2018.
from $200 ($20 Late Fee After 12/1/18)
Accommodation overnight in Omeo or the Blue Duck Inn at Anglers Rest.
This is a very long ride with a huge amount of climbing and you will need to be extremely fit and carry sufficient water and food with you on the day. Remember that conditions in the Victorian Alps can be extreme and very changeable, and that for significant portions of the ride you will be out of mobile phone range.
Even though this ride is held at the height of summer, it is not uncommon for conditions on Mount Hotham, on the High Plains and at Falls Creek to be freezing, with rain, hail or even snow, when the heat is stifling in the valleys.
Day 1 – Friday 26th January
Leave Bright after breakfast (breakfast is at 6:00am at Bright Community Centre). It’s a gentle rise to Harrietville, followed by a long climb to Mount Hotham (Australia’s highest paved road). Recover with a drink and something to eat before starting the long descent. It’s (almost) all downhill to beautiful Omeo, where you will spend the night (112km). Those staying at Anglers Rest will have an additional 27 km of stunning riding along the Mitta Mitta valley before reaching their lodgings.
Baggage transport will be provided to and from Omeo or Anglers Rest as required. Storage of additional baggage is available in Bright.
There is limited support on day 1 on the outward leg to Omeo. Water will be available on the climb to Mount Hotham and a light lunch will be provided at “The General” in Mount Hotham (opposite the Police Station on the right hand side of the road, 2km past the tunnel). There will not be on-road moto marshals or event medical support on day 1.
Accommodation in Omeo
Participants are responsible for their own accommodation and evening meal in Omeo. A dormitory accommodation option is available (unisex dorms, single-sex bathrooms). You will need to provide your own sleeping bag, pillowcase and towel.

Day 2 – Saturday 27th January
Breakfast from 6:30am at the Golden Age Hotel in Omeo, before leaving for Falls Creek via the Omeo Valley highway and the Bogong High Plains Road. This route takes you through the Alpine National Park with some of Australia’s most spectacular alpine scenery. The ‘Back-of-Falls’ climb is no less challenging than yesterday’s ascent of Mount Hotham. Arrive at Falls Creek for refreshments and join the one-day Alpine Classic riders for the descent into Mount Beauty, the climb over Tawonga Gap and the final downhill run to Bright (138km).
Although this is a 2-day ride, the climbs are still formidable. The climb to Hotham Heights is 25 km and it is 21 km back up to the High Plains via the Back-of-Falls.
Full rider support is provided on day 2 for the return journey to Bright.
